In a statement, the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television said it had not found information to support the measure and highlighted the importance of the press for the country
A Brazilian Association of Radio and Television (Abratel), which represents the communication vehicles headquartered in Brazil, repudiated the request for breach of bank secrecy of the Pan Youth Radio made by the senator Renan Calheiros on CPI to Covid-19. In a statement, the association stated that it analyzed the document and found no information to support the measure and stated that the press is not the focus of the CPI’s work. “Abratel, when analyzing the aforementioned document, did not identify any information that would support or legitimize this measure. The press, which is an essential service for the country, is not the focus of the work carried out by the CPI”, says the statement issued by Abratel. In addition, the Association said it believes that the application will be rejected or withdrawn and that, if this does not occur, a “very serious” precedent will be set. “We believe that the application will be withdrawn or rejected, if this does not occur, we will be facing a very serious, unnecessary and wrong precedent, injuring the freedom of the press and expression”, says the note.
